Exercise is always great, but how do you know if you’re overdoing it? Many people don’t talk about it, but there are risks to working out too much! If you just started a new workout routine or joined a gym and are loving it, you might think it is great to go once or multiple times per day. However, your body does need rest too!
If you overdo the workouts, you could actually be harming your body, increasing body fat, and losing strength while you’re at it. When you work out, it creates tiny tears in your muscles that only recover during rest. In addition to taking rest days, you will also need to eat healthy and drink plenty of water.
Here are some of the signs that you are working out too much and need to rest:
If you find that you just can’t perform like you once did, this is a sign you need a break. If you can’t lift as much weight, can’t run as far, or simply can’t perform like you normally do, this is your body’s first signs of overload. Another sign? You aren’t enjoying your workouts like you normally do.
If you start to feel depressed, angry, anxious, or irritable, it could be a sign that your body is feeling stressed. When your body feels stressed, your mind tends to feel stressed too.
If you notice that your resting heart rate seems to be higher than normal, you may be putting too much stress on your heart. You may also start feeling more tired or fatigued than you normally do. If you are sleeping the same and not experiencing any other stress, it is a big sign that you are overdoing the workouts. You may want to try wearing a smartwatch that can track your heart rate and sleeping habits to find out if you’re at risk.
If you are having trouble sleeping for no other reason, your insomnia might be a sign that you are working out too much. Take a break from your workouts and see if your sleep improves.
If you are working out too much, you may also notice a decrease in appetite, a weakened immune system, or an increase in fat gain. When you stress out your body, this can lead to you getting sick more often. Working out too much can see an increase in fat gain, which can be frustrating if you are trying to lose weight and burn fat.
As always, if you are not feeling well, please see your doctor and alert them of all of your symptoms.
