Have you ever heard of a Thankful Tree? If not, it might be time to start a beautiful new Thanksgiving tradition!
What is a Thankful Tree?
A Thankful Tree is a decorative tree that you and your family or friends can create for the holiday season. You create leaves for the tree that have a brief word or description of what you are grateful for and hang them on the tree. This can be as elaborate or as simple as you would like it to be – you can find many creative ideas and examples online.
One idea is to take a walk after Thanksgiving dinner to collect branches for your tree. This can be especially enjoyable if there are children at your holiday dinner, since this is an activity that can include many ages. You can pre-cut leaves in simple or elaborate shapes – you can even make heart shaped leaves, or draw leaf shapes on construction paper. If you have a kid’s table, cutting out leaves can be a fun dinnertime activity! Each person can be given several leaves to write down things they are thankful for and hang or place them on your tree.
What Does it Add to the Holiday?
This is a really fun activity that can bring the focus back to the “thanks” in thanksgiving. There are no rules for how to incorporate this into your holiday, so give a little thought to how you would like to work it. Should everyone read what they are thankful for before they hang each leaf? Or will everyone just add their leaves to the tree, not knowing whose is whose? No matter how you approach it, this can lead to a holiday tradition you may want to continue year after year. You can even save the leaves to grow your tree every year, taking a photo each year and watching it fill with more leaves and gratitude over time!
