How to Make Better New Year’s Resolutions

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions every year but fail to stick to them? It can be very difficult to keep New Year’s Resolutions or simply change any type of behavior. Here are some tips to make New Year’s Resolutions that you can stick to!:

  1. Set small, attainable goals and be specific. For example, it might be hard to stick with a resolution of going to the gym more or exercising more often or losing weight. It is much easier to give up when your goal isn’t specific enough. Try changing up your goal from exercising more to going to the gym twice a week to start and finding realistic workout plans.
  2. Be realistic. If you currently smoke multiple packs of cigarettes a day and your resolution is to quit cold turkey starting January 1st, that may not be realistic. If your resolution is to quit smoking, give yourself steps to take to achieve your goal, like cutting back a certain number of cigarettes a week and getting support from a friend or professional.
  3. Work on one behavior at a time. Don’t use the new year as a time to change your entire life. Trying to change too many behaviors or setting too many goals at once can be overwhelming and you are more likely to give up. You may also want to try to set a goal for each month to keep things fresh.
  4. Get support from others. Having a person who you are accountable to can help you stick with your new goals. It can also help to have support. Find a buddy who has the same goal as you, join a support group or share your story on social media. If you are struggling with a large goal or resolution, you may want to talk to a professional as well.
  5. Be kind. To yourself, that is. Most of us give up on our resolutions by February. That is okay! If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up. Just re-evaluate if you’d like to continue, how you can do better next time or ask for help. Don’t give up just because you had a brownie when you wanted to eat a completely clean diet or skipped the gym because you had a meeting or were sick. We are all human and that’s okay!
