What Causes Middle Age Acne? + How to Stop it

Middle-Age-Skin

Acne is most commonly a problem amongst angsty teenagers, but in reality, acne can sprout up at any age. It is more and more common for middle aged people to start getting acne, especially women. It can range from mild to severe, but it is always annoying and can be hard to manage.

So, what causes acne when you are in your 30s and beyond?

Most commonly, hormones are to blame for middle aged acne. Many women break out during PMS or during their period but acne is also associated with other hormonal issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Acne can also be a sign of menopause. Other causes of acne at any age are excess oil production that can be influenced by hormones, skin inflammation and bacteria from diet or lack of skin care, or hormonal imbalances in men and women.

While acne can be frustrating, it is also common and very treatable. To determine your treatment, you have to consider a few factors.

What is your skin type? What is your acne like? Is it mild and only associated with PMS or severe and all the time? Do you have a hormonal imbalance or skin condition that is contributing to your issue? Are you pregnant? If you are, you might have to get certain products or treatments or avoid others.

If your acne situation is situational and mild, just look into a topical treatment from your local drugstore. You can also change up your diet to avoid processed foods that can contribute to the problem and add in more healthy foods that fight inflammation.

You can go over all of those questions and concerns with a dermatologist if you have been dealing with severe or consistent acne and topical treatments from the drugstore and changes in your diet aren’t working.
