We all know how important a good night’s sleep is, but how do you know if you’re getting enough? Is there such a thing as too much sleep?
Seven to Eight Hours
For most adults, the conventional wisdom states that the magic number falls close to eight hours. For some, it may be a little less and for some, it may be a little more, but it’s important to know how much sleep you need so you can get the most out of the day ahead.
How Fast Do You Fall Asleep?
If you fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. If it takes twenty minutes or more to doze off, something may be interfering with your ability to fall asleep and you should address whatever is keeping you from a good night’s rest. Ideally, it should take about ten minutes to drift off into a deep restful sleep.
How Much is Enough?
Most people are fully rested after five full sleep cycles, which take about 90 minutes each. You will be most tired if you wake in the middle of a sleep cycle, so you might feel more tired if you wake after eight hours than you would if you wake after seven and a half. Everyone’s sleep cycles can be different, so you have to experiment a little! Start with seven and a half hours a night for a week and see how that works for you. If you are falling asleep too fast or it’s taking too long to fall asleep, you should try adjusting the time and giving it another week to adjust. It may take time to find your ideal amount, but when you learn how much sleep you need and you start getting enough on a regular basis it can change your life!
Once you’ve figured out your magic sleep number, be consistent and try to get the same amount every night. If you do wake a bit tired, your morning beauty routine can help you wake up!
