As we watch the summer heat finally start to cool, warm fuzzy socks, sweaters, hats, and tall boots are back! Along with our wardrobe changes, we also need to adjust our skincare routines. Now is the time to pay close attention to our most essential outer layer as the colder weather can damage our skin.
We’ve all experienced dry skin and cracked lips, but with daily maintenance, we can avoid this discomfort. Here are a few quick reminders for the fast approaching cooler months:
- Wash in cool water:
A steaming hot morning shower on a cold morning may sound perfect, but that hot water can dry out your skin, so keep it warm or cool.
- Moisturizing soaps:
There are many moisturizing soap options that give your skin that little extra softness that we need at this time of year.
- Apply while damp:
Apply lotions soon after you bathe so your pores are open. This allows for faster and better absorption.
- Coconut oil:
There are so many benefits to coconut oil! Try using it in place of lotion and feel the difference.
- Limit facial scrubs:
Avoid over drying by reducing facial scrubs to two per week.
- Stay hydrated:
Moisture has less to do with what is on our skin as it does with what is in our skin, so that means drinking lots of water! Our bodies need 64 oz. of water every day to make our bodies happy inside and out (that’s only two 32oz bottles of water a day!)
- Fish Oil:
Consider adding 1000-2000mg of Fish Oil supplement to your daily diet. They are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and help fight dryness from the inside out.
- Bundle up:
On cold windy days, protect your skin as much as you can by covering up exposed skin.
- Glove it:
Our hands are very vulnerable to the elements. Do your best to keep them safely tucked into warm gloves to protect them from chapping.
The turning leaves signals the return of apple pies, pumpkin soup and the fast approaching holidays. So let’s start the season with a little skin TLC to get us through the impending colder months.
