We all love drinking lemon water for the health benefits (and the taste!). Never heard of drinking lemon water? As wonderful as it is, you do need to protect your teeth from the acid! If you’re drinking a lot of lemon water (you know who you are), the acid in the lemons may be damaging the enamel on your teeth. It’s all about the total amount of acidic foods you have during the day, so if your lemon water is closer to lemon juice or lemonade, and you’re having other foods you may run into some problems at the dentist.
So what can you do about it?
- Use toothpaste and mouthwash that contain fluoride. This can help to re-mineralize your teeth.
- Cut back on the acidic foods and drink. Switch some of your lemon water habit to drinking water with cucumbers or sprigs of mint (or just drink plain ole’ water)!
- Keep your lemon usage reasonable – you only need one slice or wedge of lemon for every 8 ounces of water.
